The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) Melbourne Chapter required an engaging tabletop exercise focused on a cyber and insider threat related fraud response for their members. The exercise needed to bridge the gap between traditional fraud examination and emerging cyber threats, providing practical experience in responding to cyber-enabled fraud scenarios.
Meeting the Requirement
We developed and facilitated a comprehensive Cyber Incident Tabletop Exercise (TTX) for the ACFE Melbourne Chapter delivered to their members in Melbourne on May 21st 2026. The exercise was structured across three progressive sessions that walked participants through the full lifecycle of a cyber and insider threat incident focusing on:
- Initial response, threat validation and escalation
- Stakeholder management, activation of communication plans, engagement with third parties, and data breach reporting
- Execution of communications plans and business continuity measures
The exercise featured realistic scenario injects including endpoint disruptions, ransomware indicators, and data exfiltration attempts specifically targeting financial systems.
The Strategic Value
The tabletop exercise successfully:
- Enhanced participants’ understanding of cyber incident response procedures
- Identified gaps in existing response frameworks
- Strengthened collaboration between fraud examination and cybersecurity professionals
- Provided practical experience with Australia-specific regulatory requirements
- Delivered actionable insights participants could immediately apply in their organisations
“The cyber incident tabletop exercise delivered to our Melbourne Chapter provided invaluable practical experience for our members. The progressive scenario approach highlighted the critical intersection between cybersecurity incidents and fraud investigations. Our members now have a much clearer understanding of how to respond effectively when facing cyber-enabled fraud scenarios.” — Adeline Shelley – ACFE Melbourne Chapter President
